What to cover
Anything the recipient did not ask for is safer covered.
| Item | Why cover it | How to cover it |
|---|---|---|
| Passport number | Enough to impersonate you in many online checks | Cover it with a solid black box |
| The two MRZ lines | Number, nationality and date of birth compressed into two rows | Cover both lines in full |
| Date of birth and issue date | Easy to combine with other leaked data | Cover them when they are not needed |
| Photo and signature | Leaves your face and a usable signature image | Mosaic the face if it is not required |

Frequently asked questions
Will covering the MRZ invalidate the copy?
Keep it when a booking or filing needs the number verified. For an identity-proof copy, covering it is fine.
Should I cover the whole scan?
Leave what was asked for and cover the rest — that is the safer default.
Does this work for non-US passports?
Yes. Passport layout follows the ICAO 9303 international standard, so the same steps apply.
